Cabo San Lucas’ picturesque coastline translates to a wealth of romantic activities options, from barefoot fine dining and horseback rides along secluded beaches to couples’ spa treatments and sunset sails beyond Land’s End.
Playa del Amor (in English, Lover’s Beach) is, as the name suggests, a perennially popular destination for visiting couples. The picturesque beach is most easily accessible by water taxi, and is an excellent spot for sunning, swimming, snorkeling and romantic picnics.
The Spa at Esperanza is another great romance-friendly option. Annually ranked as one of the tops spas in Latin America, couples’ treatments are a particular specialty at Esperanza. Pampering rituals include a variety of mood-enhancing elements, such as massage, aromatherapy and aphrodisiacal cocktails.
There are two great arts centers in Baja California Sur, and both offer abundant opportunities for romantic perambulations. The Distrito del Arte, or historic Art District in San José del Cabo features weekly Art Walks during the tourist season, after-hours showcases when galleries display regional paintings, sculptures and other creative works.
The artists’ colony of Todos Santos also boasts a thriving gallery scene, but the seaside pueblo mágico is worth a day trip for its other charms, which include lovely brick architecture that’s a legacy from the town’s days as a sugar capital, as well as boutique shops and eateries.
Cuadra San Francisco is one of the Los Cabos area’s hidden gems, offering virtually every equine-related activity imaginable: trail rides over local terrain, romantic rides along secluded beaches, carriage rides for weddings or special events…even polo lessons. The late Francisco Barrera trained under Nuno Oliveira, the Portuguese legend considered by many to be the most outstanding horseman of the 20th century, and his son Valente excels at teaching dressage, and the traditional techniques of Mexican vaqueros. The stables are located in the Tourist Corridor, just off the Cabo Real Golf course, and maintain close to fifty horses. Pony-sized horses with special saddles are available for kids, who can take lessons in either riding or archery.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Romantic carriage rides are a Cuadra San Francisco specialty.
Chris’s expert tip: Guided riding tours are available over multiple terrains, from beach to desert.
Dolphin swims are among the most popular tickets in town. There are actually several ways to experience these delightful and intelligent creatures: encounters, swims and the more in-depth trainer-for-a-day program. The encounters occur in shallow water, and are recommended for young children, pregnant women and the elderly. Swims aren’t very physically demanding, either, as the dolphins do all of the work, with visitors hanging onto their pectoral or dorsal fins as they zip around the large pool. The pool is quite cool, by the way, as it has to be maintained at a temperature comfortable for the dolphins. Swims, visits with the veterinarian, and an introduction to training techniques are among the highlights of the trainer-for-a-day program.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Cabo Dolphin swims are popular with people of all ages, and a great experience to share with your spouse or significant other.
Chris’s expert tip: All Cabo Dolphins tours are assigned a photographer, and dolphin swims and encounters are exhaustively and professionally photographed.
Pueblo mágico, which translates as magical village, is a designation given to Mexican towns of major historical or cultural significance, and/or great natural beauty. There are three pueblos mágicos on the Baja California peninsula, but only one in Baja California Sur. That honor belongs to Todos Santos, a community located on the Pacific Coast, just north of Pescadero. Once a thriving sugar capital, Todos Santos retains many beautiful brick buildings from its 19th century prominence. Since the mid-1980s, however, the town has been best known for its arts scene. There are many great galleries in the downtown area, as well several excellent restaurants and hotels, including the historic Hotel California. Todos Santos is a popular day trip destination from Los Cabos, only about one hour by car from Cabo San Lucas.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Todos Santos is a popular day trip destination from Los Cabos, and perfect for romantic getaways.
Chris’s expert tip: Todos Santos offers many excellent restaurant options, including Miguel’s, a comfort food stop famed for its chile rellenos, and El Mirador, a scenic hideaway that boasts spectacular views.
Cabo Adventures is among the top activities companies in Los Cabos, with an impressive array of outdoor excursions that include dolphin swims, scuba dives, whale watching outings, outback camel tours, mountain biking and zip-lining through a UNESCO protected biosphere in the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. For adrenaline junkies, the zip-line tour is the one most likely to set the heart racing, with a series of lines crisscrossing rugged terrain in the Boca de Sierra. The longest line, dubbed Superman, stretches for nearly a mile and requires riding face down at speeds up to 60 mph. The views are spectacular, from the elevated launch point to exhilarating stretches where you seem to be flying just above the tree (and cactus) line.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Obstacle challenges and the country’s longest and fastest zip line make this an exhilarating experience for adventurous couples.
Chris’s expert tip: To maximize your speed on the zip-line, and to keep yourself from swinging side to side, cross your ankles and pull your knees up towards your chest.
Surf lessons from the former national champion of México may be the most popular water-based activities option from High Tide, but the company’s most iconic offering is a kayak paddle out to Land’s End and the Arch, with a stop at Lover’s and Divorce Beaches for sun, sand, snorkeling, snacks and superb photo opportunities. Stand up paddle boards are also availabe on this tour. Less active pursuits include an introduction to San José del Cabo’s weekly Art Walk, and off-road jeep explorations of East Cape sites like Cabo Pulmo, a rustic seaside paradise whose offshore marine sanctuary boasts one of the oldest and largest living coral reefs in the Western Hemisphere.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Tandem kayak trips to Land’s End and Lover’s Beach are an excellent outdoor activity choice for couples.
Chris’s expert tip: Sign up for High Tide’s off-road jeep explorations of scenic East Cape destinations like Cabo Pulmo and Santiago.
Cabo San Lucas has excellent sailing conditions outside its protected bay, and Cabo Sails is one of the top local options for charters, tours or sailing lessons. Available sailboats range from 28 to 44 feet in length, and can accommodate up to 20 guests for snorkel, whale watching and sunset tours, as well as private and overnight charters. The sunset tours are one of the best romantic activities in Los Cabos, with chilled Champagne, fresh sea breezes, and the unforgettable sight of the sun sinking beyond the ancient granitic monuments at Land’s End. Mariachis are optional, but highly recommended. Special sails are offered for cruise ship passengers or others with limited time in the area.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Private sailing tours are among the most romantic sunset activities in Los Cabos.
Chris’s expert tip: Snorkeling gear is included on all tours.
The Thursday evening Art Walk is a highlight of any visit to San José del Cabo, and is held weekly from 5 to 9 p.m. during high tourist season (November through June). The participating galleries are all clustered together in the city’s historic Distrito del Arte, which is one of the reasons you should forget the guided tours and enjoy this weekly event at your own pace. Sip wine, sample cheese, wander the area’s beautiful cobblestone streets, and interact with some of the top artists and gallery owners in Baja California Sur. Afterwards, explore the Art District’s many fine bars and restaurants, which include neighbors Baja Brewing Company and La Lupita Taco & Mezcal.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Art Walk is a great early evening activities option for visiting couples.
Chris’s expert tip: Several excellent bars and restaurants are located in the Art District, including the original location of Baja Brewing Company, the region’s first microbrewery.

The 144′ luxury catamaran Caborey is the premier cruise ship in Los Cabos, best known for its popular margarita and dinner cruises. The dinner cruise is one of the great local dining experiences, particularly for those who are in town for a short time and want to get a feel for the local landscape, culture and cuisine. Enjoy romantic sunset views of Cabo San Lucas Bay, Médano and Lovers’ Beaches, and the unique rock formations such as El Arco that stretch out towards Land’s End. There are two belowdecks areas for dinner, depending upon your ticket preference. There is a buffet on the middle deck, and a sit-down dinner on the lower deck with a choice of entrées. After the sit-down dinner, there is a rousing Las Vegas-style floor show featuring Mexican and Latin American singing and folk dances, headlined by a passionately romantic Argentine style tango.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Caborey’s romantic dinner cruise offers fine dining and drinks, a rousing floorshow featuring Latin American dancing, and spectacular Land’s End views.
Chris’s expert tip: One of the highlights of the dinner cruise is the floor show featuring Latin American song and dance. The performers are available for photos after the show, an opportunity often missed by those lining up to leave the ship.
Lover’s and Divorce Beaches are as close as you can get to Land’s End, the peninsula’s southernmost point, without a boat. However, visitors will need to hire a water taxi or other water-based transportation to access them. Lover’s Beach is on the Sea of Cortés side, and offers safe swimming and very good snorkeling conditions. It also features spectacular views of the bay, and is the area’s most famous site for romantic picnics and wedding related photo shoots. Neighboring Divorce Beach is accessible through a break in the rocks, and is distinguished by crashing Pacific Ocean waves (Warning: avoid swimming on the Pacific side due to strong rip currents and occasional rogue waves). There are no vendors or services on either beach, so pack accordingly.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: Playa del Amor is one the Los Cabos area’s most beautiful beaches, and a perfect spot for a romantic picnic.
Chris’s expert tip: Swimming and snorkeling are very good from Lover’s Beach, although the water can be a bit chilly during the winter months.
